| In 1995, piano teacher and baker Alice Perron established a fruitcake making business called Bien Fait Fruitcakes in Greensboro, Vermont.Alice built a wonderful reputation baking delicious cakes for the holidays and providing seasonal part-time jobs for other local women in her farmhouse kitchen.While their mothers baked, several of the bakers’ children were lucky enough to participate in the community enrichment programs run by a nearby nonprofit, Greensboro Wonder & Wisdom.
Over the years demand for Bien Fait cakes increased slowly and steadily, as did the clear need for a sustainable way to support a small rural nonprofit for children and seniors. In 2008 these two ideas — baking and community — came together when an L3C corporation for the bakery was formed. This special designation allows an entity to exist as a “low-profit” business to support a charity. Now the bakers of “Bien Fait Specialty Cakes” can supply their delicious cakes throughout the year with all profits going to support Wonder & Wisdom.
